Dental Implants
Dental implants are a more permanent solution to replace missing or extracted teeth. Dental Implants are better than other alternatives like bridges because no additional teeth need to be altered to place the new tooth.
The entire implant process takes approximately 4 to 6 months. The first stage is the placement of the dental implant into the jaw to serve as the base for the planned restoration. An incision is made in the gum so that the implant can be inserted. Multiple implants can be placed at one time if necessary. After the implants are placed, the gums are sutured.
After the implant is placed, we will anticipate at least 3-6 months for the implant to stabilize. This process is called osseointegration.
After the implant has stabilized, the second stage involves placement of a tissue healing cylinder (healing abutment) on top of the implant. Approximately 4 weeks after placement of the healing abutment, the restorative phase will begin with your general dentist who will make you the final crown. Once the restorative process is completed by your general dentist, we will see you for periodic evaluations.
Mini Implants
Mini dental implants are approximately half the size in diameter of a regular dental implant. This offers many benefits, and they can also be used in situations where regular implants cannot be used. If an implant needs to be placed in a narrow space, mini implants are the preferred method because of their smaller diameter.
A main use for mini implants is to aid in the retention of full upper or lower dentures. A series of mini implants (4-6) are placed within the jaw. The mini implants may sometimes be inserted through the gum tissue directly into the bone. This may eliminate the need for a prolonged recovery period, and the restoration (denture) can often be placed soon after implant placement.
